ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC Review : Gaming Notebook

Among the lovers of AMD products that are targeting gaming laptops can now rejoice. After a long time dominated by Intel processors and NVIDIA graphics cards, gaming laptops with processor and graphics card components from AMD finally came into the market. Debuting in the event Computex 2017 ago, ASUS gaming laptop ROG STRIX GL702ZC finally officially set foot on the market.

The choice of processor component for ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC falls into Ryzen 7 1700 type with 65 Watt TDP (Thermal Design Power) rating. Body design ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC looks does not offer much difference compared to other ROG STRIX GL Series product variants. The body is made of hard plastic material with a touch of metal brush finish in the area around the keyboard and the back side of the screen. The black color covers the entire surface of the body with a typical red element ROG on a particular section.

It takes a large space to place a cooling system that is able to tame Ryzen 7 1700 heat and Radeon RX 580. Therefore it is not strange if the body thick ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC reach 3.4 cm.

Exclusively the ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC screen has been using an IPS panel that is known to display richer and more accurate colors and has a very wide viewing angle of up to 178 °. The ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC delivers a keyboard with anti-ghosting technology and a 30-key rollover allows command input with 30 buttons at once without error. The keyboard key has a compression spacing of only 1.6 mm making it responsive when playing a game or typing. ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC keyboard is claimed to have durability of suppression up to 10 million times so no need to fear quickly damaged.

The keyboard of the ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC keyboard uses a 1.5 x 1.5 cm chiclet design for letters and numbers with arrow keys and numpad slightly smaller. Only the buttons on the top row have the smallest size.

Our test unit features 256 GB SSD M.2 SATA III 6 Gbps from SanDisk as primary storage and 1 TB HDD SATA III 6 Gbps 5400 RPM as secondary storage. Quite unfortunately, ASUS does not directly complete this 20 million rupiah gaming laptop with NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD. Right next to the HDD component is the speaker module for the left side.

Test Results - System Benchmark

PCMark 7 Creativity contains a set of tests to assess system performance in viewing, editing, transcoding, and storing photos and video files.

PCMark 7 Entertainment contains a set of tests to assess the performance of the system in recording, viewing, streaming, and transcoding television shows and movies. The performance of the system in importing, organizing, and browsing music files along with playing games are also tested here.

PCMark 7 Productivity contains a set of tests to assess system performance in loading wirsite pages and running home class office applications.

PCMark 7 Computation contains a set of tests to assess CPU and GPU computing performance.

PCMark7 Storage contains a set of tests to assess the performance of storage components on a system.

Power Consumption

With the use of electric power that high, it is not strange if needed a power supply unit with 330 Watt capability. In 3D rendering testing scenarios where processor capabilities are used in full, power consumption is in the range 150-160 Watt. Interestingly though it is present in laptop form, our test results show if ASUS did not trim at all the original performance of Ryzen 7 1700 so that the capability gets the same as desktop version.

Radeon RX 580 - Graphics card with the Polaris 20 GPU looks fit to be paired with Full HD screen on the ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC. Games can be displayed in maximum visual quality without fear of sacrificing play comfort factor due to low frame rate. Memory capacity / VRAM 4 GB also makes Radeon RX 580 ready to handle modern games with high memory requirements. Even the implementation of AMD FreeSync technology on the screen is ready to make the game experience more perfect with the loss of symptoms of image tearing, stuttering, and lag input. Of course the use of the RX 580 also makes ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC ready to handle VR content (Virtual Reality) perfectly.

ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC gaming performance itself is at level approximately equivalent to another gaming laptop with Core i7 7700HQ + GTX 1060 6 GB. Unfortunately with such gaming performance levels, the ASUS ROG STRIX GL702ZC comes with more bongsor size, heavier weight, and higher power consumption than its competitors. Moreover GTX 1060 6 GB offers memory capacity / VRAM higher so better prepared to handle game "greedy" memory. With body size, weight, and power consumption like that, should the gaming performance offered can be even higher.
